- Description
- This paper presents a successful application of a novel hybrid diesel/electric propulsion system in a marine vessel. The proposed system is designed to incorporate DC sources (battery banks, hydrogen fuel cells), AC sources (diesel-powered AC generators), and electric loads (motors and auxiliary loads). Power sources and loads share a common 100V DC bus and are organized using the principles of a decentralized DC microgrid. Control of the microgrid is implemented without the use of explicit telecommunication. The paper describes elements, design principles and development stages of the system. The paper then demonstrates the operation of the proposed hybrid propulsion system with a 22ft prototype boat. The development of a full-scale 43ft marine vessel is currently underway.
